Lebara Mobile – Cheap phone calls to Hungary, Poland, Spain etc.

I said that I am not promoting any stuff no more: This is not a promotion, just a review. “We” foreign fellas and ladyfolks in the UK always try to find the ways to communicate with our friends and family in the cheapest way – there’s SkypeOut, landline, some dodgy temporary voip phone providers who often disappear from the market after a while. Lots of guys use BigTel, but I heard many negative critics about it. Bad voice quality, lack of coverage. But check this out…:

Now, here’s Lebara Mobile’s new low-cost mobile solution. It is pay as you go, no contracts and it beats all the provider’s prices I’m aware.

lebara_mobile.jpg I grabbed a SIM at Phones4u a few weeks ago, it came with a £20 topup on it and it was ready to use. I can tell it is better voice quality and stronger signal with Lebara than with my contract Orange phone. Which is quite cool. The key to it is that Lebara uses the Vodafone network in the UK. And vodafone is well-known about their good (however not the cheapest) services. On top of all that here what everyone’s the most curious about: the call tarrifs. Here is a short list of the countries I regularly call (prices from the Lebara website correct on today’s date):

Country Landline calls Mobile calls
Hungary 4p/min 14/min
Poland 4p/min 9p/min
Spain 4p/min 15p/min

Funny that these prices almost beat my Hungarian SIM’s rates if I’m making calls at home. And let’s not forget we are talking about international calls here from your MOBILE on the go. No computer calls like SkypeOut or other voips, no complicated pre-dial numbers like DialAround or BigTel. Just simply dial the number. And its voice quality again: crystal clear. Easy, cheap. coooool :) . I don’t think it could get any cheaper than that. You can topup online or in any vodafone or phones4u store. Lebara is also handy if you are abroad with the excellent roaming tarrifs. In Europe it’s just 39p/min to make a call, receiving is 19p/min.

Since Lebara mobile uses vodafone network it will work not just in an unlocked mobile handset. You will be able to use Lebara with a vodafone contract or PAYG phone too. I tried, I know. That’s my suggestion for my fellow foreign people who wrecked on this miserable island. Which we actually all LOVE though:p And only because I managed to buy an 18 pack Kronenburg 1664 white beer in Tesco for just £7.74 today to decently enjoy the UEFA semi-final tonight:)NOT just the Lebara Mobile cheap here!
peace you all_

So what do you use to call UK when you’re overseas?

    Hi Allen,

From now I use Lebara. It’s 39p/min to call 10p to receive. That beats my UK Orange roaming tariffs sky high.

I usually redirect my calls from orange to Lebara and so my clients and friends don’t even need to know that I’m using another SIM. they simply call my orange number and I answer it (cheap) abroad using the Lebara one.

    Simple and low-cost.

how much you pay for your roaming? just curious…

    Hi there,

sounds too good to be true! I read in some bloggs that Lebara charges the people you call. One Guy wrote that he called the Emirates: it cost him one Pound, but the poerson he calles was charged as well – with seven [!] Pounds.

    Any comments?

    Best wishes, Benrhard

    Hi

I have a couple of mobile phones that I purchased in Portugal with obviously Portugese numbers. These curently have TMN SIM cards in. Question, can I register these numbers with Lebara and then benefit from the free Lebara to Lebara phone charges that they advertise.

I have/had a Lebara sim, I tried unsuccessfully to add credit on line due to software error. Tried to phone 2222 and the were closed for 12 hours. Spent 1/2 a day traveling around stores that were listed as places that could add credit. They all said they had no involvement with Lebara. Frustrating enough but if it had been a necessity to contact somebody I would have been left High and Dry.
The contact number I was given 634126666 was unobtainable for over 24 hours.

For your own safety think long before trying to save a few cents.
